Djent is a punchy sub-genre of progressive metal, bringing complex approaches to songwriting into a world of big basslines and tuned-down guitars. Often paired with a futuristic sci-fi style visual identity, I had fun recreating this particular vibe.
Visually, Hyperpop is very broad, likely because it is a broad genre itself with hotly debated categorisation and delineation. However, there are some key themes I managed to pluck out: glitch effects, pink and sparkles.
One of the archetypal “thump thump” music genres often found in rave scenes. Visually, the genre takes a lot from sci-fi; think about the aesthetic motifs of The Matrix and mix that with an empty warehouse. In more modern iterations of the genre, there has been some interesting variations from the standard fare.
An aggressive, yet technical genre, I focused on the fact that mathcore exists to mess with existing formulas and blended that with a literal interpretation of the word “math” in the genre’s name.
Often cited as the “real” emo, this genre evokes sadness and lamentation, layered over pretty riffs. When people talk about “sad boy” music, this is likely what they mean. The visual language of the genre is often very simple or hand-drawn, likely because of its DIY origins.
Shoegaze is often accompanied by a specific aesthetic, evocative of TV static, usually with a dream-like feel. This echoes the wall-of-noise vibe of the genre. I aimed to reflect this typical aesthetic, all while adding my own spin to it.
Witch House is a dreamy industrial soundscape with many influences taken from fantasy and the occult in its visual language. My aim here was to capture this magical influence while re-enforcing the electronic sound in the visual interpretation.
